Emmet Rushe shares the single best tip for making sure you stay on track with your fitness journey.

Fitness has exploded in Donegal over the past few years.

The number of people training is on the rise and it doesn’t look to be slowing down.

When I started out training, there wasn’t much in the way of choice.

You had limited options if you wanted to train

  • The gym
  • Circuits
  • Take up a sport

That was the height of the choices and quite often, you had to go to another town if you wanted to use a gym.

This has changed dramatically over the past 8 years.

Now every town has gyms, Bootcamps, Fitness centres, C25K’s, multiple sporting clubs and associations. The choice is endless depending on what you enjoy.

What fitness path is right for you?

When you start out on your fitness journey, your choice is usually governed by what your friends are doing or what is the ‘in thing’ at the time.

This will give 1 of 2 results;

  1. You will either love what you are doing and stick with it.
  2. You will hate it and give up.

If you have started with a friend or with a group of friends for support and you end up not liking what you are doing, it can be difficult, especially if you don’t like what you are doing.

If you stop, how do you find somewhere else to go, now that your friends are still doing the other thing?

If you keep going for the social aspect, but you are not enjoying it, will you really be putting the effort needed, to get the results you are after?

When looking to start your fitness journey, the best piece of advice I can give you is to find something that you enjoy doing.

If you enjoy what you are doing you will stick to it longer, put more effort into your training, be less likely to miss sessions and be more likely to get results.

This mightn’t be what your friends enjoy, but that shouldn’t be an issue.
If you enjoy it, the chances of you sticking with it and getting the results you are after will increase 100%.

This might seem like simple advice, but from experience, sometimes the simplest advice is the best.

I have met loads of people over my years of training, who stuck with something out of habit, and readily admitted that they didn’t like what they were doing, but were afraid to change.

So, here’s what to do;

  • Have an open mind
  • Get your friend involved from the start and agree to try every option in town.
  • Narrow, it down to 1 or 2 that you enjoyed
  • Give these another few tries
  • Pick the one you liked the best and go have fun.

It’s a simple as that.

Once you have found something that you enjoy and look forward to returning to,  your goals, whatever they are, will be easier to reach and keep once you get there.
