How amazing are toners? You can switch up the overall tone of your hair, reduce brassiness or add vibrant colour for an instant new look – all while avoiding bleaching or colouring.

I visited Patrick Gildea Hairdressing in Letterkenny for another toner transformation this week. This time, stylist Claudia McLaughlin added a pretty pastel pink to my blonde ends.

This sweet blush is probably the most daring colour I’ve ever had, but with the change in seasons, I think it’s the perfect fun switch from my cool-toned summer balayage.

Before/After Toner

Conditioning

All guests at Patrick Gildea are given an ‘Energy Code’, which means that products and treatments are personalised to your hair’s own energy. My hair ends are coloured and the texture is quite coarse, so Claudia used the Liquid Hair conditioning treatment and applied the toner to my hair while it was dry for the best results. It worked a charm.

The Liquid Hair filler (available for just €9 add-on) helps reconstruct damaged hair so it helps the colour stay longer. It also lasts for up to five washes.

What’s new for Autumn 2020?

People are focusing a lot on hair condition and shine these days, Claudia tells me. The pandemic has switched our preferences to softer styles and colour.

As you expect every year, the Autumn 2020 colour trends are moving more to coppers, auburn and chocolates.

Balayage continues to be a strong trend, along with face contouring with a hint of soft sun-kissed shades around the face, which they do so well at PGH.

After my toner, Claudia used the Dyson Airwrap round brush to add volume and soft waves – I love how the blow-dry maximises the blend of colour in my hair.

Visit the hair salon is still a treat during the pandemic. It’s clear that the team at PGH take great steps to ensure everything is fully sanitised and everyone is distanced and safe. We might be staying home a lot more, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have great hair!
