Interior designer Lynn from La Maison Letterkenny has tips for switching up your home decor to switch on the Christmas cheer.

Decorating your home for Christmas is the ultimate way to kick start your festive cheer, but it can be a bit daunting or overwhelming to know where to start. Here are our top tips for creating your own perfect winter wonderland in your home.

Rethink your theme

The first thing to do is to pick your theme. Gone are the days where festive reds and greens are your only option; you can be traditional or minimalist, co-ordinated or multi-coloured, nostalgic or rustic, the festive world is your oyster!

The most important thing is to pick a theme that suits your own style, lifestyle and budget.

Go green

Whatever style you go for, a great way to bulk out your decorations is to include lots of greenery.

Aside from the tree, greenery can be used for natural garlands on mantels, stair banisters and table runners, to drape around picture frames and doorways, or as part of a decorative table centre.

These work very well when combined with more decorative elements for a bit of glitz and sparkle, but also when combined with lemons and clementine, cloves and cinnamon sticks for a natural and delicious smelling arrangement.

Merry lighting

When it comes to lights at Christmas, it definitely is the more the merrier! Fairy lights are the go-to for trees and garlands, but think about adding some festive lights in other areas.

Lanterns on stairs, hearth side and at doorways give an immediate warmth and welcome, and candles in mercury glass votives incorporated in a table decoration add intimacy to your Christmas table.

Deck all the halls

Don’t reserve your best décor for the sitting room; the Christmas tree is just the start!

From a festive door mat to baubles strung from your chandelier, go quirky and decorate unexpected places to create a wholly inviting festive interior, and have a bit of fun!

Use any Christmas cards you receive as extra decorations in either a card holder, or strung with small wooden pegs on some twine.

Easy cosy add-ons

Christmas is also a great time to pull out the plaid or tartan throws, and drape them over the backs of chairs and sofas for an instant festive feel. They should always be combined with a large cuppa, an open fire and your favourite Christmas movie!

La Maison would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
