There are heavy hearts in the Donegal community following the sad death of Michael McGrath.

The brave Letterkenny man passed away peacefully at the Donegal Hospice on Thursday, 1st February.

Michael, aged 40, was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer late last year.

The married father-of-one’s plight united the entire community who responded magnificently to Michael’s plea for funds to undergo pioneering treatment in Austria.

As well as numerous local fundraising campaigns, a Go Fund Me page set up by Michael’s family raised more than €167,000 ensuring he could have his treatment immediately.

Michael, his wife Susan and sister Mary flew to Vienna in December and returned to enjoy a memorable Christmas with his little son Senán.

He returned to Austria in January but his suffered complications with his treatment and flew back to Donegal last week.

After a brave fight filled with dignity and hope, the much-loved and respected GAA fan and St Eunan’s stalwart passed away peacefully at the Donegal Hospice last night.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Susan, Senan as well as Michael’s family including dad Pat, mum Mary, sisters Bernadette and Mary and brother Anthony, and a wide circle of friends at this trying time.
