There will be music and merriment on Letterkenny Main Street as the big Christmas Lights Switch On takes place this evening.

The festive bash begins at 6pm, with music on the street leading up to the big switch on at 7pm at the Band Stand at Market Square.

The privileged guests who will do the honours are a local National school pupil, Sparky the BE Energy Mascot and the Mayor of Letterkenny, Councillor James Pat McDaid.

There will be lots of free treats along the street from 6pm and an appearance by Santa himself once the town has been officially lit up.

Families planning to join the fun will need to be wrapped up warm as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing once more after 5pm.

Soup, mulled wine, hot drinks, snacks and plenty of Christmas cheer will be provided by local businesses to keep the crowds warm.

Wrap up and have fun!
