A fundraising drive has been launched in aid of an eight-year-old Donegal girl, who has to travel for Germany for vital treatment.

Caitlin Strain from Burnfoot has a brain tumour and has to undergo eight weeks of radiotherapy in Germany, followed by months of chemotherapy in Ireland.

A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with medical expenses as well as travel and accommodation and you can donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-caitlin-and-her-family-in-her-recovery

Caitlin celebrated her eighth birthday with her family outside Temple Street Children’s Hospital on February 21.

“I had the best birthday,” she beamed afterwards.

Two days later, Caitlin had surgery and she had a further procedure on March 3.

Just days before her birthday, Caitlin’s parents, Eimear and Thomas, received the horrifying news that their little girl had a brain tumour.

‘Caitlin is a lovely little girl with the most amazing personality, putting a smile on the face of all those she encounters,’ organisers of the fundraiser said.

The initial surgery was a success, the surgeons removing all they could and now Caitlin continues her recovery at Temple Street, where she is said to be making ‘good progress’.

A spokesperson for the fundraising team said: ‘Caitlin’s treatment will be long and very difficult. She will receive radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy.

‘Caitlin will travel to Germany for Radiotherapy and will be required to travel two weeks earlier to allow for isolation before treatment.

‘On behalf of Caitlin’s family we wish to thank all medical staff involved with Caitlin’s care and everyone for their prayers. Please continue to keep Caitlin in your prayers.’
