As the nights get darker, there's nothing nicer than a warm and cosy home. Interior Designer Anne Tuohy has an easy guide to achieving that feeling.
The obvious one.
Have your chimney cleaned, and light your fire or stove.
As improved building regulations and insulation in contemporary homes continue to negate the need to have an actual real fire or fuel burning stove, manufacturers are designing seriously authentic looking electric and gas fires. On a winter’s evening, there is nothing more enjoyable than snuggling up in front of the comforting flicker of flames, real or otherwise.
Also, move your sofa and chairs up closer to the fire. This also enhances the sense of coziness, and creates a comforting and relaxed chat space too.
Add splashes of warm colour with bright cushions, rugs and wall art. Use colours like mustard, claret, mulberry and orange to pack a warm, vibrant punch.
Light the candles
Memories are tied up in familiar scents, and I just love coming home and smelling Jo Malone’s Pomegranate Noir, which instantly says “welcome home” to us. I burn the same fragrance throughout the house, and although I aim for subtlety not an overpowering effect, you are always aware of the underlying gorgeous smell. Whenever I am away from home, I bring a travel sized candle with me. It helps me to relax and unwind.
So, pick whatever signature scent you prefer, and try it out in your home. The secret lies in having the one scent throughout your home. It will definitely contribute to a pleasing familiar sense of contentment. Your family will love you for it.
Lighting for ambience
I also place battery operated lights in clear glass jars and vases. This help create an additional layer of warmth and ambience. Putting your lights and lamps on dimmer switches also improves this layered sense of cosiness.
Another lovely way to bring in additional warmth, colour and texture to your room, is to add a beautiful soft throw.
We are blessed to have the incredible Mc Nutt’s on our doorstep here in Donegal, where you will be simply spoiled for choice in softness, luxury and glorious colours.
I hope that you all had a gorgeous summer, although I must confess to being a bit of a winter girl. I love the comfort of winter clothes, and I also relish evenings parked in front of the fire, with a cup of tea and a good book.
My winter looks exciting. I have three new build homes to get ready for a Christmas tree, which is such fabulous fun. I also have availability for one 1:1 client, so if you are contemplating a build, or have already started, and are struggling a little, give me a no obligation call. I would love to be the catalyst to create your perfect home. You can message me here to arrange a friendly chat.
