The parents of 23-month-old baby Alfie Evans have announced that he has passed away, five days after his life support was withdrawn.

The Liverpool tot had an undiagnosed brain condition and had been in a coma for over a year at Alder Hey Hospital. He was at the centre of a high-profile legal battle as his parents Tom Evans and Kate James fought to prolong his treatment. His life support was turned off on April 23, 2018.

Dad Tom announced his death on Friday night, posting on Facebook: “My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30… absolutely heartbroken… I LOVE YOU MY GUY”.

A vigil was planned for baby Alfie in Letterkenny on Friday evening, as local people gathered to show their support for Alfie and his family through prayer and a balloon release.
