When it feels too warm to sleep these days, why not try these top tips from interiors expert Anne Tuohy?

Here are my simple tips to help cool you down, and get a good night’s rest.

Your body temperature needs to drop slightly before you fall asleep, which is why it is so hard to fall asleep when you are too hot.

I used to live in Bermuda, sometimes without air-conditioning, so here are some of my best ways to stay cool when it is just too hot to sleep.

Use an electric fan to keep you cool. Here’s an old Bermuda tip. Put a small bowl of iced water in front of the fan, to cool the air further

Keep as many windows and doors open as possible to allow air to circulate. When you have the windows at the front and back of the house open, with your internal doors also open, you will create a pleasing draught, which will cool down your home.

During the day keep your bedroom curtains or blinds drawn, with the windows closed while the sun is at its hottest. You can open them in the evening when the heat has died down. If you have blackout lining in your curtains, it will also stop the heat from the sun coming through the fabric. Shutters are perfect, as they will keep out the sunshine, yet allow the air to flow. This is why there are such a popular window dressing in warmer climates.

Remove your duvet, and replace with a cotton sheet. Wear cotton pyjamas too, as they will absorb perspiration, and help you feel cool.

Drink plenty of chilled water in the evening, and take a glass to bed with you too.

If you are in the market for a new mattress, you can get one with a built in temperature regulating capability. Very useful in the depths of winter too! You can also get pillows that are temperature regulating.

So, do make the most of that glorious sunshine during the day, and try and stay cool at night as well!

Just think, with my help, you could have a cool home after the heatwave too!
