Legendary singer and actress Doris Day has died today at the age of 97.

The American screen star passed away at her home in Camel Valley in California.

Known as one of the biggest female icons of all time, Day became a star in the 1950s and 1960s from hits such as Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk and Hitchcock‘s The Man Who Knew Too Much.

She later became an animal rights advocate and it was through her charity that the world learned of her death today.

In a statement, the Doris Day Animal Foundation said she had been “in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia.

“She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed.”
