“The weather outside may be frightful, but your skin doesn’t have to be.”

Beautician Lorraine Quinn of Beauty at the Lodge Ballybofey shares steps to take to save your skin from the effects of harsh cold air.

Winter is on its way, and let’s face it, it’s not good for your skin. Harsh winds, cold temperatures and dry air tend to sap skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and stressed.

Unfortunately, it’s not only the weather that can challenge your winter skin care. Stress around the holidays, changes in routine and eating more sugar and fat than usual (which can happen around the holidays or in response to a lack of sunlight) can cause an occasional breakout, tightness and dullness.

As soon as you turn on the heat at home, the skin starts to dry out. It doesn’t matter if you heat your home using oil, wood or electricity. The skin gets dry!

You can help reduce these effects by taking some precautions in your daily skin care routine. Try these tips:

Visit your Therapist: Your therapist can analyse your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regime and give you advice on the skin care you should be using.

Change it up a gear: Most likely, your summer skin care routine will not cut it in the winter. As weather conditions change, so too should your skin care routine. You will probably need more moisture more often. If you usually use a water-based cream/Lotion, you may need to switch to an oil-based moisturiser, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin and retain more moisture.

We suggest using our Masque Essentiel Nutrition Confort  a couple of times a week to replenish lost moisture and our Nutrizone Corps Nourishing Body Cream is great for an all-over softer feel.

Choose your cleanser carefully: Some cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, drying it out and over time, leading to more visible lines and wrinkles. So remember to check out your cleansers, it could be ageing your skin. Choose a more nourishing option.

Exfoliate: Exfoliating your skin brings back that youthful glow that is so often lost during the winter months. Try our Gommage Eclat Parfait Exfoliating Cream a couple of times a week in conjunction with your mask. I find these two products work hand in hand to achieve that lovely radiant glow.

Protect: Winter weather appears to be less sunny, but remember those harmful UV rays are still out there. Always protect skin with a safe sunscreen like one that contains zinc oxide and wear protective hats and clothing.

Shorten your showers: Hot water feels great in the winter, but it saps skin of its natural oils. Try to limit your long, hot showers and baths to once or twice a week and choose lukewarm showers the other times. Always apply moisturiser immediately after patting skin dry.

Eat right most of the time: Simple sugars and carbohydrates stimulate reactions in skin that can lead to breakouts. Avoid these during your daily life and you’ll experience fewer setbacks when you indulge at the holidays.

Give your hands a hand: The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Try our Longue Vie Mains Vital Hand Cream. Always take it with you to apply regularly and wear gloves to protect the skin on your hands from the harsh winter weather.

Rejuvenate: The winter months are a great time to provide your skin with more nutrients so it can better withstand winter stress. Try our Time Logic Age Serum before your regular moisturizer every night.

Try a sugar scrub on lips: Chapped lips are the bane of winter living. Get rid of that dry, flaky skin with a homemade sugar scrub. Simply mix some regular sugar with some jojoba, coconut, or safflower oil and rub gently on the lips once a day. Add a little honey for healing properties. Follow up with a nourishing lip balm.
