Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Letterkenny's biggest girls school, is now considering enrolling boys.

The board of management has written to all parents inviting them to attend a meeting on 23rd October to discuss the possibility of the school going co-ed in September 2018.

A spokesperson for Scoil Mhuire gan Smál confirmed the move to Donegal Daily today.

The move follows a similar move by the nearby all-boys school, Scoil Cholmcille National School.

Parents of children at Scoil Cholmcille National School met on Tuesday afternoon to learn more about a proposal to make the all-boys school a co-educational mixed school from next year onwards.

Principal Pauric Cannon told those at the meeting the plan was not intended to force parents to choose between both schools.

He added that his school is proposing a model where both schools could continue to “flourish”.
