We sampled the four new flavours released by McDaids Football Special Ltd to see how they live up to our favourite Donegal soft drinks.

Launch of new McDaids Ice-Cream at Rockets Letterkenny, June 12th 2017

A wave of excitement and nostalgia went through Donegal at the weekend when we discovered that McDaid’s Football Special Ltd were launching their own ice-creams.

The iconic Donegal company have blended their classic flavours into four artisan ice-creams in Football Special, Pineapple, Banana and Cream Soda. Now everyone’s screaming for McDaid’s ice-cream!

The McDaid’s drinks are a pride and joy of Donegal people, who love to share them with visitors and ship them off to family and friends abroad craving a taste of home. Now we can have a truly Donegal dessert this summer.

The official launch took place today in Rockets Ice Cream in the Letterkenny Shopping Centre, where it is now being produced locally.

In the interest of informing the public, we took on the task of tasting all four! (It’s very hard work indeed)

Did they pass the taste test? Of course they did! Here’s what we thought:

Rockets Ice Cream Letterkenny

Football Special – set to be a top favourite flavour

Football Special – this tastes so like Football Special that you’ll be struck by all your childhood memories of drinking the mystery mixture when you taste it. The cola, caramelly flavours are beautiful as an ice-cream, and it tastes very like a cola float your parents would have whipped up at home. Nostalgia at every lick!

Cream Soda – this is sweet, but not too sweet and oh-so creamy. Also very true to the original McDaid’s Cream Soda taste, this is a refreshing new flavour you won’t find in any other ice cream. Who knew it would work so well?

Banana – this could be a fast favourite as the strongest tasting mix of the four. The blend of banana and cream is powerful but not too much that you can’t enjoy a few scoops. Delightfully fruity – and would work amazingly well in a fruit dessert.

Pineapple – a more subtle flavour than the rest, but a lovely alternative for any vanilla ice-cream fans who are looking for a little twist on tradition. It’s the creamy consistency of the Rockets ice-cream that helps to make this, and all the flavours, so deluxe and delicious.

The tubs are retailing at a recommended price of €5.00. You can get individual scoops at Rocket’s Ice Cream Parlour in the Letterkenny Shopping Centre to try them all.
