Storm Barbara is expected to hit Ireland today, bringing severe winds of up to 120km/h.

An Orange weather warning was has been issued by Met Eireann, with Donegal being one of the worst affected counties.

There will be heavy rain this morning with a risk of spot flooding and thunder. The day will brighten in the afternoon, but rain and strong winds are forecast.

Reporter Teresa Mannion and the RSA have advice for road users on how to drive in extreme weather: Please plan all journeys carefully, leaving plenty of time to reach your destination. In strong winds, speed should be reduced and extra distance should be allowed between your vehicle and other road users.

The rain is expected to continue into Christmas Eve and it will remain breezy and cloudy. Christmas Day will be mild and breezy, with rain moving in for the evening.
